Statement, VANA,

All of us in Veterans Against Nuclear Arms (VANA) are shocked and horrified by the terrorist attacks in the United States. Our profound sympathy goes out to the thousands of injured and bereaved. One of the many bonds that unites us in VANA is a shared understanding that civilization is very fragile. New York is fragile and so is Washington. But Baghdad is fragile and so is Belgrade. In the face of modern weapons, our entire human civilization is fragile. It is fragile and vulnerable to attacks by F-16 jets. It is also fragile and vulnerable to attacks that F-16 jets and missile defense systems are powerless to prevent. The enormous military structures of the United States are the wrong place to look for security from such attacks. Security will only be found in dealing with the severe world problems that gave rise to these desperate and horribly misguided attacks. The place to start dealing with these problems lies about eight miles north of the World Trade Center disaster, on the East River at the United Nations Organization world headquarters. The UN is still our best hope for peace.
