Iraq meeting in Wellington - 29 February


'The Iraq Sanctions at International Law'

Kevin Baff, who formerly served with UNSCOM, the United Nations monitoring group in Iraq, will provide a firsthand account of the operation of the United Nations sanctions regime.

Shuna Lennon, a partner of Duncan Cotterill, Christchurch and a member of the Iraq Sanctions Medical Alert Group, will speak on the topic "Sanctions, Genocide and War Crimes". Ms Lennon will explore the legality or otherwise of the United Nations (UN) sanctions and blockade regime against Iraq in terms of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Nuremberg Principles and other international instruments.

Allan Bracegirdle, a former international lawyer and Council member of the New Zealand Branch of the International Law Association, will comment on the position of sanctions at international law.
