Armed Coup in Fiji - PCRC Statement

23 May 2000

Kia ora,

We have today contacted the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre (PCRC) and everyone there is fine. Their email is currently down due to telecommunications problems in Fiji. Below is the preliminary PCRC statement on the attempted coup in Fiji which was issued on Saturday, 20 May. There will be a longer statement available later in the week which we will circulate as soon as we have it.

PCRC Press Statement

20 May 2000

The PACIFIC CONCERNS RESOURCE CENTRE (PCRC) is the Secretariat of the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific (NFIP) Movement with a membership of one hundred and fifty non-government indigenous and grassroots organisations in the Pacific Region, Pacific Rim and internationally.

PCRC/NFIP supports, respects and upholds the basic human rights of everyone in accordance with the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

PCRC/NFIP wishes to express its condemnation of the unlawful and cowardly acts of those who brandish themselves as representatives of the Fiji Islands indigenous people, that are holding hostage the members of the democratically elected Government of the Fiji Islands.

PCRC/NFIP fully supports the right of indigenous people to self-determination through peaceful dialogue within a legal framework.

PCRC/NFIP therefore appeals to the instigators of this takeover to desist from their current aggressive mode and employ the ‘Pacific Way’ of dialogue and consensus building for the betterment of the Vanua and the Fiji Islands as a whole.

We the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre (PCRC) and the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific (NFIP) send out our prayers to His Excellency the President of the Fiji Islands Ratu Sir Kamisese Kapaiwai Tuimacilai Mara and the various communities of the Fiji Islands during this dark chapter in its history.

PCRC/NFIP fully supports His Excellency the President of the Fiji Islands in his efforts to bring a resolution to this impasse.
