Statement of World Peace Council on East Timor

16 September, 1999

Welcoming the results of a recent referendum in which overwhelming majority of the residents of East Timor express their will for independence, the Worl d Peace Council would like to express its heartfelt solidarity to the effort s for the independence of East Timor. The results of the referendum was of g reat significance in terms of a historical current of 20th century character ized by the growing number of national independence. All forces concerned sh ould respect its results and immediately start the process for the independence.

We are firmly opposed to the destruction, violence and massacre by armed fo rces rejecting the independence. We strongly demand an immediate stop of the se actions and the peaceful solution of the problem based on the observance of human rights and security of residents.

Indonesian government should fulfill its responsibility in taking all necess ary measures to stop terrorists' actions including of forces opposing to ind ependence, to consolidate the situation, and to ensure people's life and sec urity. The government together with all political forces in East Timor have to do its utmost for the realization of the independence. We also call for a ctive measures to be taken by UN for the independence of East Timor on the b asis of relevant UN resolutions.

The World Peace Council calls upon all peace movements in Asia and in the wo rld to take active initiatives of support and solidarity for the independenc e of East Timor and possibly the soonest peaceful solution of the situation.
