East Timor - Union bans ships

Radio Australia - World News, 7 September 99 (12.16pm)

Maritime union bans Indonesian ships

Australia's Maritime Union has announced nation-wide sanctions and bans on Indonesian ships, in response to the crisis in East Timor.

Nino Tesoriero reports, the M-U-A is calling on other maritime unions around the world to follow suit.

The Martime union says it will apply industrial bans on Indonesian ships entering Australia to pressure the Indonesian government to provide leadership to stop the bloodshed in East Timor. The bans mean martime workers will not load or unload cargo from Indonesian ships at most ports around Australia. The MUA says the Austraian Council of Trade Unions supports the industrial action which should commence after endorsement from the union's affiliates tomorrow. The MUA's Action National Secretary, Paddy Crumlin is calling on the Federal Government and businesses to support the action. "I would hope they.would be as morally outraged as any other free thinking individual in the world today and be supportive of people taking action.".
