IFET-OP: All Observers Fleeing New Violence in East Timor

6 September 1999

News has just come from Dili, East Timor, that the already tense situation there has become completely chaotic. All of the remaining 22 international observers with the International Federation for East Timor Observer Project (IFET-OP) are fleeing East Timor. They are waiting for a police escort to the airport, but all roads are blocked and the gunfire is getting closer to their house.

According to anxious phone discussions with IFET-OP observers in Dili, UNAMET has confirmed that the International Red Cross office has been completely destroyed by militia groups. The situation is extremely volatile.
