ACTU - East Timor campaign

Radio Australia - World News, 8 September 99 (2.57pm)

Australia's peak union body announces its campaign for peace

Australia's peak union body, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, has announced a campaign for peace in East Timor.

Nino Tesoriero reports .. the campaign includes bans on all Indonesian government and commercial interests in Australia. ACTU officials met this morning to finalise details of the campaign and have now called on the labour councils and all affiliates to undertake a campaign for peace in East Timor. The campaign includes bans to be placed on Indonesian government and commercial interests, a withdrawl of services other than those considered essential from similar interests and a call for a consumer boycott of Indonesian products and services. The ACTU affiliates have also supported calls for international finance agencies such as the IMF to suspend assistance until peace is restored. ACTU president, Jenny George, says any employer who tries to penalise workers for taking part in the campaign will be opposed by the whole union movement.
