Letter to Phil Goff

11 May 2002

The Hon Phil Goff
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Parliament Buildings
Wellington

Dear Mr Goff

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) supports the call for the New Zealand Government to impose sanctions against Israel in an attempt to end its occupation and destructive attacks on the Palestinian territories. For a start New Zealand could state that it will not sign any new contracts with Israeli firms or government agencies.

We note that the government has recently imposed sanctions against Zimbabwe. The case for sanctions against Israel is no less strong. An initiative from New Zealand might also encourage other countries to follow suit.

We would also like to suggest that the government should show support for the Palestinian people by joining the 125 countries which have recognised the Palestinian state and by giving Palestinian diplomats official status.

Yours sincerely
Joan Macdonald, President, WILPF Aotearoa
