Just as the occupation of East Timor by Indonesia appeared to be moving towards resolution, the Indonesian military forces have struck back through proxy paramilitary groups which are terrorising the population and killing supporters of independence. These paramilitary groups are armed, trained and sheltered by the Indonesian armed forces.

It is vital that international pressure be brought to bear on the Indonesian government and military and that the window of opportunity for change in East Timor is not closed. Please write or fax the New Zealand government asking them to speak out strongly and that they use all opportunities available to them to support a process of self-determination for the East Timorese. The New Zealand government has a record of timidity on this issue and needs pressure to take a meaningful stand on the issue.

Ask that the New Zealand government:

  • Immediately suspend all training and assistance to the Indonesian Armed Forces.
  • Call for the complete withdrawal of Indonesian troops and an ending of their training, support and protection of paramilitary groups, for a ceasefire in East Timor and for the deployment of United Nations peacekeepers on the ground.
Write or fax, as soon as possible, to :
Jenny Shipley, Prime Minister, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, fax: 04 473 7045
Max Bradford, Minister of Defence, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, fax: 04 471 1440
Don McKinnon Minister of Foreign Affairs, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, fax: 04 471 1444

Send copies of your letter to: Helen Clark, Leader of the Opposition Parliament Buildings, Wellington: fax: 04 473 3579.
