HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP DISARM NUCLEAR SUBMARINES WITH A HAMMER ... WITHOUT BEING ARRESTED OR LEAVING YOUR HOME !

You may have heard of Trident Ploughshares 2000 - peace people who have committed themselves to personally disarming Britain's Trident nuclear weapons system, as the British government seems so reluctant to make a start on this themselves ?

On 1 February Rosie James and Rachel Wenham (of the group Aldermaston Women Trash Trident) swam out to HMS Vengeance, a new British submarine which will carry Trident nuclear warheads, in the Barrow-in-Furness docks where it was having final work done to it in preparation for its sea trials. They painted 'illegal' 'death machine' 'women want peace' and 'stop the violence' then took out their hammers and destroyed its sea trial monitoring equipment. They then walked to the security cabin and handed themselves in - and were charged with criminal damage of (pounds sterling) 25,000.

Their support team, Helen Harris, Janet Kilburn and Louise Wilder were also arrested and charged when they later went to the Barrow police station to deliver dry clothes for Rachel and Rosie. Vengeance was due to start its sea trials on 28 February but remains at Barrow - presumably undergoing repairs.

The women have asked for hammers to be sent to them - household hammers, inflatable hammers, pictures of hammers, knitted hammers, photos of hammers, toffee hammers, sledgehammers, pneumatic hammers - the hammers may be used in the women's court appearances, media work, speaking tours ... they may find their way on board nuclear armed submarines ... onto nuclear weapons convoys ... into nuclear weapons bases ...

PAPER HAMMERS FOR PEACE

To make it easy for you, we have devised a cunning paper hammer, which you can fax or post to the women. You can get your copy from PMA in the following ways :

* as an email attachment - we have an IBM clone PC running Windows 95, and the attachment is in ClarisWorks 4 for PCs. Your computer needs to be able to open this software for this method to work;

* you can download it from this website:

* we can post you a paper copy. Please let us know how many you want, and the postal address to send them to. Koha for copying and post would be very nice, but is not essential.

Instructions are printed on each Paper Hammer for Peace.

Paper Hammers for Peace was initiated by Peace Movement Aotearoa on International Women's Day, 8 March 1999 - celebrating women's work for peace around the world !
